Private investigator badge – how can you have one?

Private investigator

To qualify as a private investigator you must follow a course and in some states, have a license to practice this sort of job. The conditions for becoming a private investigator are: to be at least 18 years old and not to have a criminal record or like it's said to have it clean. In other states you must have at least 3 years experience in a field related to private investigations such as military and police work. Once you've become a private investigator you can choose a branch in which you want to specialize, in other words to concentrate your investigations in the domain you like to practice, such as financial investigating.

The badge

What's a private investigator badge? How can you get a private investigator badge? For what reasons do you need a private investigator badge? A private investigator badge is like the police and their badge system. Just like a policeman will flash his badge at you when you have done something wrong, and to identify themselves as a police officer, a private investigator will do much the same thing. It is basically used an as an identification process for the PI.

The private investigator badge is being given by the Private Investigators Association that you represent, and it's like an identity card that you use to legitimate yourself with. It has your name on it and a serial number with whom you are registered in your association. Private investigators need their badges for having a gun and for arresting people; you can't have a firearm or arrest someone as a private investigator if you don't have a badge.

If you are found to be guilty of not obeying the Private Investigator Association code of ethics in which you're registered you can be suspended from your function, or even have your taken your private investigator badge completely if you are suspended for a second time.

What to avoid as a PI

If you are a private investigator and you are found guilty of a criminal act, your license is taken from you and so is your private investigator badge. If a private investigator license expires so does the badge. If your license expires today after 30 days it becomes delinquent. And if you don't renew your delinquent license in 3 years you are obliged, if you want to continue as a private investigator, to start all over again with the application process.

For instance, in the state of California private investigators cannot carry a private investigator badge because they can be mistaken for an officer or other official. Yet, they can carry a gun if they have the permit of the Bureau to do so, and have passed the training course for using a firearm. Also a private investigator can't do everything that a policeman does, because he has no real law enforcement power. The only thing that he can do is to make a citizens arrest, a thing that can be done by ordinary people too.
