Get a Certificate

The first step when starting a private investigation business you should do is getting a private investigator certificate and this is easy with so many private investigation schools. Graduating private investigation school would not hurt but this is not a guarantee you will succeed. More important than certification and/ or certificates are your resourcefulness, integrity, life's experiences, academic skills and several other things.

There are many academies and schools and a few collages offering private investigation training, if you own a private investigation business it will definitely be worth doing some training. There are also distance learning schools that have private investigator courses and you can also find interactive private investigation courses available via the Internet. Some people learn best through experience and others learn better in a school environment, it is up to you how you want to learn private investigation business.

You should also find out if you need a license to be a private investigator because most of the states have for private investigators a licensing law. If there is no there is no state licensing law you might still need a license because local jurisdictions like cities or counties sometimes require one.

How much money can you make?

A lot! As a private investigation agency you can charge from $40 to $100 per hour; $50 to $55 per hour is the average across the country. Hazardous materials investigations and capital punishment defense are examples of high fee private investigation work. As a professional agency you would have to pay your salaried investigators at least $25,000 but don’t worry you will make much more.

Also you should know that many agencies pay their private investigators based on the amount of hours they produce for the agency. For such an arrangement the average percentage is 40%. If you will charge $60 per hour and pay the investigator 40% you will make $24 per hour.
